Sunday night, 'Falling Skies' season 3 came to an ultimate end in "Brazil," setting up the TNT alien actioner for its guaranteed fourth season in 2014. Before the Spielberg-executive-produced drama kicks up production on another round, however, departing showrunner Remi Aubuchon previewed the new season to come under 'Battlestar Galactica' vet David Eick, as well as a few lingering plot points from the past season.

For one, season 3 finale "Brazil" left few unanswered questions or cliffhangers to move into season 4, as the 2nd Massachusetts resolved to return to Charleston and regroup for a more human-centric resistance. Aubuchon explained to Entertainment Weekly that he certainly intended to set up Anne and Alexis' (now appearing at least 6) return for a season 4 mystery, though he hadn't quite plotted that far. Certainly, Alexis will be perceived as "special" going forward, but questions remain over why Tom saw his wife and child dead weeks ago, only to reappear in a forest.

Aubuchon also revealed that new showrunner David Eick might plan a similar time jump to the seven-month leap that preceded season 3, as the major mile markers of the story were more interesting to highlight than the initial details of getting there. "It’s just smart storytelling," says the writer. Meanwhile, the show will continue to follow Spielberg's rules and focus on the human perspective rather than explain the Espheni's true intentions for invading Earth, though Aubuchon offered that answers might arrive in the fourth season.

As for the guest stars of season 3, several of which were left out of the finale for scheduling purposes, Aubuchon hopes Gloria Reuben (Marina Perlata) and Ben's friend Deni (Megan Danso) will return for the fourth season, time permitting. Perhaps more pressing would be that of actor Doug Jones (Cochise), who has a three-season option, though Aubuchon explained that they opted against making the character a "token" alien out on the road with the 2nd Mass next year. Still Jones' talents could well see him portraying other alien characters, or even a human in the future.

Well, what say you? Do you think 'Falling Skies' season 3 effectively wrapped up the story with enough setup for season 4? What would you like to see when the series returns for 12 more episodes in 2014?
