‘Friday Night Lights’ Movie Kickstarter in the Works?

Friday Night Lights Movie Kickstarter Brian Grazer

Though no Hollywood Kickstarter effort has been all that well-received since ‘Veronica Mars‘ controversially utilized the service to launch its long-awaited film, it seems the ‘Friday Night Lights‘ movie may finally happen thanks to the crowd-sourcing website. Producer Brian Grazer insists the movie adaptation of Peter Berg‘s NBC/DirecTV series — itself adapted from the original movie adaptation of the same name — remains in development, with crowd-sourcing as its likely next step.

As much as fans have clamored for a ‘Friday Night Lights’ movie to continue the story of Coach Taylor and the Wildcats, the next step in getting the film adaptation off the ground could well divide fans. Following in the footstep of ‘Veronica Mars,’ producer Brian Grazer recently confirmed to Deadline that the movie would likely turn to crowd-sourcing both for funding, and as a demonstration of support for the movie. Deadline wrote:

Grazer tells me they are absolutely moving forward with a movie version of another Imagine series, Friday Night Lights, and they will likely use crowdfunding to directly tap the rabid fan base of that drama for some of the budget. “We made a terrific feature with Pete Berg, turned it into a terrific TV series and will now make a movie from that series,” Grazer said. “I’m not sure such a thing has been done before.”

Grazer has experience resurrecting old properties, from ‘Arrested Development‘ to the recent ‘24′ revival announcement, but not everyone is enthusiastic about getting the ‘Friday Night Lights’ movie off the ground. Series star Kyle Chandler previously said of a follow-up “My general attitude about ‘Friday Night Lights’ is that it was a great movie with Billy Bob [Thornton]. It was a great TV show, and I never had more fun doing anything. They ended it at exactly the right time, and exactly the right way.”

What do you think? Would crowd-sourcing finally get the ‘Friday Night Lights’ movie off the ground? Will it take more than clear eyes and full hearts to win? Tell us if you’d watch a ‘Friday Night Lights’ movie in the comments!
