Once upon a time, AMC’s Into the Badlands dragged its feet on a Season 2 renewal after only six episodes. Now, Sunny’s profile has risen, enough to snag an early Season 3 renewal with as many episodes as Seasons 1 and 2 combined.

Just over halfway through its second season, Into the Badlands has been announced to return in 2018 with an extended sixteen-episode order. The first season came in at only six episodes, with Season 2 expanding to ten hours. Said AMC:

‘Into the Badlands’ looks like nothing else on television, a literal high-wire act attracting passionate and dedicated fans by the millions. Thanks to series creators and showrunners Al Gough and Miles Millar, the terrific cast, led by Daniel Wu, the amazing martial arts team guided by the incomparable Master Dee Dee and fight directors Stephen Fung and Andy Cheng, and everyone else involved who brings this thrill ride to the fans.

Added Gough and Millar:

We are excited and grateful to continue our journey into the Badlands with Charlie, Joel, Susie and all of our friends at AMC. We also want to give a big clipper salute to our Irish and Chinese partners! The thought of doing an expanded 16-episode season is both thrilling and exhausting!!

The second season moved production to Ireland, also adding Edgar Wright favorite Nick Frost to the cast. Season 2 also drew increased attention from comparisons with Marvel’s Netflix Iron Fist, giving the former a significant edge in fight choreography (though star Daniel Wu has come to Finn Jonesdefense).
