Though it's been a possibility ever since 'Dumb and Dumber' became one of the surprise hits of 1994, it appears that a 'Dumb and Dumber 2' with the original cast and crew - which the Farrelly brothers said was a go project a couple months back - has fallen apart as Jim Carrey pulled out.

This news comes from ET Online, and it hits us with mixed feelings. On one hand Carrey has not been picking the best projects for a while, and it would be good to see him return to his roots in a go-for-broke/look-like-an-idiot comedy. On the other, this is a man who's now eighteen years older, and the idea of returning to that well as a fifty-year-old is kind of sad.

And of late, the latter is more than likely the case. The late-stage sequel/prequels like 'Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull' and last year's 'The Thing' left few audience members satisfied with the end results. Carrey suggests that the reason he's left the project is that Warner Brothers and New Line were less than enthusiastic. And though the film business is all about branding, Carrey is not the star he once was and this was no sure bet.
