NBC Orders Live ‘Peter Pan,’ ‘Wizard of Oz’ Series, Katherine Heigl CIA Drama

NBC’s gamble in resurrecting the live TV musical paid off handsomely (for viewers and tweets, anyway), so the network has set their sights even higher. NBC will next look to adapt ‘Peter Pan’ as a live televised performance, and has also given a series order to ‘Wizard of Oz‘ drama ‘Emerald City,’ and a pilot order for ‘Grey’s Anatomy‘ vet Katherine Heigl‘s CIA drama ‘State of Affairs.’

Speaking from the still-ongoing Television Critics Association press tour, NBC head Bob Greenblatt announced the news of all three shows in development, also revealing a development deal for ‘Parks and Recreation‘ star Amy Poehler. As for the ‘Peter Pan’ adaptation, Craig Zadan and Neil Maron will once again run the show, set to air later this year on December 4. The title role will go to a male performer, though thankfully not Justin Bieber, as Greenblatt joked.

Elsewhere, NBC’s modern 10-episode take on the classic L. Frank Baum stories, ‘Emerald City,’ features the logline “A head-strong 20-year-old Dorothy Gale is unwittingly sent on an eye-opening journey that thrusts her into the center of an epic and bloody battle for the control of Oz.” The impending 75th anniversary has brought all manner of ‘Oz’ TV series into development, including Lifetime’s ‘Game of Thrones‘-style ‘Red Brick Road,‘ ‘Heroes‘ creator Tim Kring’s CW series ‘Dorothy Must Die,’ Syfy’s ‘Warriors of Oz,’ and the CBS medical procedural ‘Dorothy.’

Lastly, NBC has given a pilot order to CIA drama ‘State of Affairs,’ a new series starring former ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ doc Katherine Heigl as a CIA analyst. We’re at least on board for the new ‘Wizard of Oz’ series and the snark to come out of ‘Peter Pan Live!’ later this year, but what say you? Which of NBC’s new dramas has you the most intrigued?
