For all we’ve seen and heard about Thanos as, like, the biggest villain, like, ever, we really don’t know much about him in regards to the MCU. We know he was behind Loki’s initial invasion of Earth, but the Avengers don’t. We know he wants the Infinity Gauntlet to rule the Universe, but they don’t. We know the little shiny MacGuffins our heroes have been picking up here and there on their adventures are Infinity Stones, but they don’t. Which creates an interesting situation when it comes to how all of this is going to be revealed.

Stephen McFeely, who co-wrote the screenplay for Avengers: Infinity War, is featured on one of the special features in the Doctor Strange Blu-ray, in which he talks about how Thanos comes to form his grand plan for the next showdown (via ScreenRant).

His goal is to re-balance the universe as he sees it. So when he figures out that the Infinity Stones could do this for him at the snap of a finger, that becomes his main goal.

Sounds about right. The Infinity Gauntlet, with all its gems intact, gives its user the power to do whatever he or she wants, which, for someone like the mad Titan, is irresistible. We saw him put the gem-less Gauntlet on at the end of Age of Ultron, which could mean that he breaks into Asgard and steals it between Ultron and the upcoming Thor: Ragnarok (there’s a shot of the Gauntlet in Odin’s Treasure Room in the first Thor).

The big guy seems to have some kind of master plan, but it’s still a bit of a mystery what it actually is, even with McFeely’s new info. What exactly does he mean by “re-balance the universe”? And, now that all of the gems have been found, how is he planning to get them all?

Avengers: Infinity War hits theaters May 4, 2018.
