Last night saw Showtime saying goodbye to two of its main attractions, pulling the plug on 'Dexter' permanently (we hope) while 'Ray Donovan' said goodnight until 2014. And even though acclaimed Emmy-winner 'Homeland' and the buzzworthy 'Masters of Sex' will kick off in less than a week's time, the cable network delivered our first sneak peek of 2014 "psychosexual horror thriller" 'Penny Dreadful.'

Though brief and without any real footage to its name, the first 'Penny Dreadful' teaser highlights star Eva Green asking us to believe in the supernatural, with flashes of the monstrous creatures that will unleash themselves over the course of the new series. Helmed by ‘Skyfall‘ duo Sam Mendes and John Logan, Showtime describes 'Penny Dreadful' thusly:

In PENNY DREADFUL, some of literature’s most famously terrifying characters – including Dr. Frankenstein and his creature, Dorian Gray and iconic figures from the novel Dracula – become embroiled in Victorian London. The series weaves together these classic horror origin stories as the characters grapple with their monstrous alienation.

In addition to Green, the series stars Josh Hartnett as Ethan Chandler, a “man of action and daring” who doesn’t shy away from violence; Timothy Dalton as Sir Malcolm, a hardened African explorer on a deeply personal quest; Reeve Carney as Dorian Grey; Helen McCrory as spiritualist Madame Kali; 'Skyfall''s Rory Kinnear; and 'Doctor Who' vet Billie Piper as an Irish immigrant seeking to escape her dark past.

Preview Showtime's monstrous new thriller in the teaser above, and tell us in the comments if you're looking forward to the likely spring premiere!
