Showtime Monster Mash 'Penny Dreadful' Sets May Premiere, First Freaky TrailerKevin Fitzpatrick |
Showtime's forthcoming monster drama, 'Penny Dreadful,' has been something of a question mark up to know, even with such well known stars as Josh Hartnett and Eva Green, and Sam Mendes producing a mash-up of history's great literary monsters, but wonder no more! Showtime has officially booked a May premiere and revealed our first real heart-stopping look at 'Penny Dreadful.'
"Do you believe there is a Demimonde, half-world between what we know and what we fear?" asks Eva Green's mysterious beauty Vanessa in the first official 'Penny Dreadful' footage, currently set for a May 11 premiere. "A place in the shadows, rarely seen but deeply felt? Where some unfortunate souls are cursed to live always?"
"That sounds like a warning," Josh Hartnett's Ethan Chandler fires back, amid a backdrop of supernatural creatures and sex-filled imagery. "It's an invitation," she replies. Helmed by ‘Skyfall‘ duo Sam Mendes and John Logan, Showtime describes ‘Penny Dreadful’ thusly:
In PENNY DREADFUL, some of literature’s most famously terrifying characters – including Dr. Frankenstein and his creature, Dorian Gray and iconic figures from the novel Dracula – become embroiled in Victorian London. The series weaves together these classic horror origin stories as the characters grapple with their monstrous alienation.
In addition to Green, the series stars Josh Hartnett as Ethan Chandler, a “man of action and daring” who doesn’t shy away from violence; Timothy Dalton as Sir Malcolm, a hardened African explorer on a deeply personal quest; Reeve Carney as Dorian Grey; Helen McCrory as spiritualist Madame Kali; ‘Skyfall”s Rory Kinnear; and ‘Doctor Who‘ vet Billie Piper as an Irish immigrant seeking to escape her dark past.
Each tantalizing glimpse has us more and more excited for the May 11 premiere, so take a look at the first footage above, and tell us if you'll tune in for the scares of Showtime's 'Penny Dreadful'!
