Now, we'd never besmirch the good name of the 'Star Wars' movies.  At least three of them, anyway.  But is it us, or does 'Star Wars: The Clone Wars' come closer and closer to blowing them out of the water with every season?  Whether increasingly dark, or wildly stretching continuity, 'Clone Wars' makes us forget all about that purported live action 'Star Wars' TV series everyone keeps going on about.  Want to see why?

Set to debut for an impressive fifth season this September, 'Star Wars: The Clone Wars' today debuts its action-packed trailer for the upcoming outing, courtesy of Entertainment Weekly.  Even if you haven't kept up with the first four seasons, or wonder just how all this story could possibly take place between 'Attack of the Clones' and 'Revenge of the Sith,' its definitely among the coolest we've seen 'Star Wars' look in years.

In the first look at season five, you'll catch plenty of eye-popping sights new and old, including returns from Jon Favreau's Mandalorian warrior Pre Vizsla, what seems to be the formation of another rebellion against the Republic, and of course, loads of swinging lightsabers (and dark sabers!) from the revitalized Darth Maul, his brother Savaage, and Jedi and Sith alike.

So, will we see anything pop up from a certain older 'Star Wars' trilogy?  Says 'The Clone Wars' supervising director Dave Filoni:

There’s a lot of payoff coming. I think people are going to see ways 'The Clone Wars' ties together more and more with 'A New Hope.' We’re setting up elements that eventually become the Empire.

For now, the trailer is available only on EW, along with a detailed breakdown of things we will and won't see in the coming season, so have a look and tell us what you think of 'Star Wars: The Clone Wars Season 5 in the comments!
