Far and away, the best-received addition to Supergirl Season 2 has been Floriana Lima’s Maggie Sawyer, and the LGBTQ visibility of her relationship with Alex (Chyler Leigh). That said, there may be some slight turbulence ahead in Season 3, as Lima has been downgraded from series regular to recurring.

Supergirl producers confirm that despite a Season 2 finale proposal from Alex to Lima’s Maggie, Season 3 will not feature as much “Sanvers.” Lima apparently declined to continue on as a series regular, but will recur in Season 3 for a time. Says executive producer Andrew Kreisberg:

We adore Floriana and have loved working with her to tell this inspiring story. Although she’s not available to us as a series regular next season, as she’s looking to pursue other opportunities, we’re happy she’ll be returning for multiple episodes in Season 3.

Lima herself also addressed the news:

Elsewhere of Supergirl Season 3, we know that Katie McGrath’s Lena Luthor has been elevated to series regular, while casting has begun for new big bad “Reign.” Calista Flockhart will also not return in a regular capacity, despite Cat Grant being featured in the final two episodes of Season 2, along with Tyler Hoechlin’s Superman.

We’ll surely hear of additional casting changes for Supergirl Season 3 before long, but might Alex and Sawyer have to put an engagement on hold?
