Good morning! Chances are that you’re just getting up and at ’em now, but a few time zones ahead in sunny France, the film industry has had a busy day. This morning saw the official announcement of the Cannes Film Festival’s class of 2017, with the full Competition and Un Certain Regard slates announced by head honcho Thierry Frémaux in a live press conference in the wee small hours of this morning. As ever, the Competition lineup (the most prestigious program in the world’s most prestigious film festival) boasts a deep roster of cinema’s most respected auteurs, ready to pull back the curtain on some tantalizing-sounding new projects. But let’s not talk around the real news here: Adam Sandler’s going to Cannes, baby.

Close to thirty years will have passed when Twin Peaks resurrects on Showtime, to say nothing of how broadcast and cable standards have changed. Still, don’t expect the 2017 revival to undergo any graphic overhaul, as Showtime bosses reveal David Lynch is “taking advantage of cable freedoms,” but “David’s pretty clean.”

At this point, we’ve no idea what to expect from Showtime’s Twin Peaks revival, particularly if David Lynch will allow for any real trailer. All the same, our first official look at the cast’s grand return is here, along with a few scant new details of the “feature film in 18 parts.”

Humor me for a moment — is Damien Chazelle‘s old-school romantic musical La La Land really all that far removed from the cinema of David Lynch? Like the avant-melodrama triumph Mulholland Dr., Chazelle’s film is obsessed with the artifice that defines both Los Angeles and the entertainment industry around which it was built. Both films revolve around a pair of people inexorably drawn to one another, linked even as they drift apart due to the vicissitudes of circumstance. Both Lynch and Chazelle are fond of stylistic breaks from reality, exploring a dreamlike or otherwise surreal plane beyond this dimension. Hell, “here’s to the ones who dream” might as well be the mission statement of Lynch’s entire filmography.

Twin Peaks creator David Lynch proved predictably David Lynch with his refusal to divulge details of Showtime’s 18-episode revival, though the eccentric creator at least offered that controversial prequel Fire Walk With Me would serve as important prelude. As such, Showtime will re-run the film in March, affording ample time for another catchup before our May return to the Black Lodge.

Twin Peaks fans finally had their prayers answers with word that not one, but as many as four new episodes would premiere on May 21, to say nothing of the confirmed 18-episode order. Now, Showtime and David Lynch address if said 18 will prove the last of Twin Peaks, when we might expect a trailer, and what role the prequel Fire Walk With Me might play.

It’s been a long time coming, and opaque even for David Lynch, but Twin Peaks is finally ready to pour a new cup of coffee. The revived mystery-thriller has at long last confirmed a two-hour May premiere, along with an episode order.

Twin Peaks creator David Lynch’s famed secrecy isn’t the only reason Showtime won’t confirm a date for its 2017 revival, as reports suggested Lynch wasn’t required to set one. Recent rumors suggested Showtime might have something to display at Sundance, but now an intriguing tidbit could place an official premiere closer to April or May.

We still don’t exactly know when in 2017 the new Twin Peaks will premiere, let alone when to expect a possible trailer or photos, but attendees of this year’s Sundance Film Festival may get a little of that fine coffee. Conversations are apparently taking place for Twin Peaks to have a presence at the event later on in January.

Showtime’s Twin Peaks has as already confirmed a vast majority of original series stars aboard for the 2017 revival, though it remained to be seen if creator David Lynch would step out from behind the camera. Now, a new teaser promises Gordon Cole’s return, as David Lynch enjoys one of Twin Peaks’ famous donuts.
