At this point in his career, after rewriting the rules of superheroes with The Dark Knight and rewriting the rules of movie dreams in Inception, Christopher Nolan can basically do whatever he wants. And what he wanted to do this year, apparently, was tell the story of one World War II battle. Dunkirk, which Nolan also wrote, follows Allied soldiers during the Battle of Dunkirk, where they were pinned down by German forces and had to enact a mass evacuation. This first trailer plays up the sense of danger and dread all around these men as they’re trapped and surrounded on this beach and picked off from the skies above by German bombers.

In recent years, the poster designers of Hollywood have fallen victim to a viral case of Friedrich fever, aping his epochal painting Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog with their own designs. Everyone who wasn't too hung over to remember Art History 101 in college identified the classical influence on the one-sheet for Star Trek Into Darkness, which sees a shrouded figure gazing out over a wreckage strewn wasteland in place of a churning tempest. And back in summer 2013, the eminently similar poster for After Earth placed the character very seriously named Cypher Raige atop a massive spacecraft in a similar position. Today, that illustrious genre gains yet another entry, courtesy of none other than Christopher Nolan.

After that stunning teaser came out in early August for Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk, we haven’t heard much more about the movie, aside from its prospective early showings in 35mm and 70mm formats. It’s kinda nice not knowing that much about a movie before it premieres (aside from the fact that we all kinda know pretty much how Dunkirk went). But fans of both Nolan and Star Wars are getting an early Christmas present this year: apparently many outlets have heard that a whole seven minutes of Nolan’s new film will be screened before Rogue One, only in IMAX 70mm theaters.

Christopher Nolan’s latest effort doesn’t arrive until next summer, but if a new report is accurate, then Dunkirk might be hitting select theaters a little early. As with Interstellar, Nolan shot his World War II drama on film, and rumor has it that the director is looking to repeat his previous strategy by releasing Dunkirk two days early in theaters equipped for 35mm and 70mm projection.

What happens when you let Christopher Nolan make a World War II drama? That’s more of a rhetorical question than anything, but just in case you need an answer, the first teaser for Dunkirk has arrived. Although brief, Nolan’s latest film looks every bit as gorgeous and intense as we imagined — maybe even more. As if we weren’t already tired of this disappointing summer movie season, Dunkirk just gives us another reason to think that 2017 can’t get here fast enough.

Christopher Nolan is still in production on Dunkirk, a new drama that reunites the director with Cillian Murphy and Tom Hardy to recount the riveting true story of the famous evacuation of Allied forces during World War II. Although the film doesn’t hit theaters until next July, a new rumor suggests that we may see the first teaser for Nolan’s latest as soon as this week — and you don’t have to stretch your imagination very far to figure out where it might pop up.

When Christopher Nolan staffs up, he staffs up hard. For his war epic Dunkirk, a retelling of the British mission to evacuate Dunkirk during WWII that ultimately saved hundreds of thousands of lives, it was not enough for the vaunted filmmaker to shoot on a combination of 65mm film and IMAX 65mm, or to produce on location at the very battlegrounds where so many noble soldiers lost their lives... Recently we learned about Nolan’s upcoming project: a World War II-era action thriller titled Dunkirk, which centers on the dangerous mission to evacuate soldiers in Dunkirk, France in 1940.
