Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

We got our first look at Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them just yesterday, offering a sneak peek at Eddie Redmayne’s magizoologist Newt Scamander, along with a few of his pals. While the Harry Potter spinoff is based on the fictional textbook featured in both the book and film series, very little has been said of the plot of Fantastic Beasts. Today brings some plot details as well as a full rundown of the new characters we’ll be meeting next fall.

Eddie Redmayne graces the new Entertainment Weekly cover as Newt Scamander, a preeminent “magizoologist” (hello, new dream job) who travels to New York in 1926 to visit the pictured Magical Congress of the United States of America. The States’ response to the Ministry of Magic, the art deco-influenced building resides inside the Woolworth’s building.

Tarzan might be stuck up in the trees for a while. Although Warner Bros. plans to release its upcoming 3D Tarzan film, starring Alexander Skarsgard and Margot Robbie, in July of next year, it looks like that may not happen. According to a new report from THR, sources close to the production reveal that there’s still a lot of work to do on the unfinished film.

Ron Perlman has long been the sort of actor who can perform beautifully both as a regular human and under loads of make-up and prosthetics, which makes his casting in Harry Potter spinoff Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them exciting — is he playing a Fantastic Beast, or one of those who finds them? Fans of Perlman in heavy make-up can rejoice because he’s playing a beast…sort of.

The casting recently began falling into place for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, but the Harry Potter spinoff isn’t done just yet — Samantha Morton has joined the line-up of the upcoming film, which has begun shooting in London. Given that the story brings its protagonist over to New York, it shouldn’t be long before filming commences stateside.

An already impressive cast for the upcoming Harry Potter spinoff Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them has gotten even more impressive. Colin Farrell, currently confusing people on Season 2 of HBO’s True Detective, has signed on to play a wizard in the film, where he’ll co-star with Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Ezra Miller and Alison Sudol.

Just yesterday we learned that Transparent star and singer-songwriter Alison Sudol joined Harry Potter spinoff Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, which boasts Eddie Redmayne and Katherine Waterston in the primary lineup. That lineup will now also include another familiar face, as Dan Fogler has joined the cast in what’s being described as a very important Muggle role.

The search for a Queenie is over — singer and actor Alison Sudol, most recently seen on the hit Amazon series Transparent, has joined the cast of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, in which she’ll play younger sister to Katherine Waterston’s Tina. The Harry Potter spinoff marks the A Fine Frenzy singer’s big screen debut, and what a debut it will be.

The cast of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is really shaping up to be something special. Eddie Redmayne was the first to join the cast in the lead role, with Inherent Vice breakout star Katherine Waterston recently joining him in one of the two leading women roles. And now another excellent name is circling the project: Ezra Miller, who is also set to play The Flash on the big screen for WB.
