After all this time thinking that Rian Johnson's 'Looper' was an original concept, it turns out we were wrong. The sci-fi film featuring Joseph Gordon-Levitt tasked with killing his future self, played by Bruce Willis, has been done before...and with the same actors. In fact, footage has been posted to YouTube that proves these two high-profile actors teamed up years ago and starred in a film with the exact same concept as 'Looper.'

'Looper 2' - Going Back to the Future With a Sequel

The success of Rian Johnson’s ‘Looper’ is great news for fans of wholly original movies, because the Sony-distributed, time travel-based hit is not based on a novel or comic book or toy or anything else, and hopefully it is a harbinger of things to come. But that originality may spawn unoriginality as the success of the film may dictate a 'Looper 2.' Should there be a 'Looper 2?' Could there be a 'Looper 2?' We investigate.

After a few painful weeks, it looks like the box office has finally found its legs again. The combined power of 'Hotel Transylvania' and 'Looper' announced the end of the post-Summer doldrums and the start of the true Fall movie season. Sony, who distributed both films, must be the happiest studio in town right now.

Retro Rental: Get Ready for 'Looper' With 'Primer' ... or Vice Versa

And that's the problem with time travel, or at least part of the fun, which is that where you enter into the story may not be where the people in the story are coming into and out, like we discussed earlier. In 'Looper,' time travel works the same as a one-way bus ride to Muncie, if Muncie were 30 years before in the time-and-space continuum and the bus broke every rule of physics as we know it. In 'Primer,' the time machine works in a similar fashion -- never putting you forward, exactly, but rather putting you back so that you can move forward from that back and do everything over again, but different, and since only you have any knowledge of what really happened before, why not change it?

The talk on everyone's lips this week is both that of Rian Johnson's "Joe Go Lev" sci-fi time-travel actioner 'Looper,' opening Friday, as well as Saturday's pivotal 'Doctor Who' that says goodbye to several fan-favorite characters.  We'd even heard a bit about 'The Hobbit' director Peter Jackson looking to try his hand at directing 'Doctor Who,' but what are the odds that Rian Johnson's next big project could trade 'Looper's for the TARDIS?

We've already known how creative Rian Johnson is, and Emily Blunt even attested to that fact back during our Comic-Con interview. Back then, the celeb gave us some tid bits about what the director has in store for us with his latest project 'Looper,' and we'll find out soon enough when it hits theaters this Friday, September 28.
The movie tells the story of a designated hitman (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) who kills people from the future who are sent back in time by the mob. But when he's faced with killing his future self (Bruce Willis) and "closing the loop," he misses the target and has to track himself down to finish the job.
We had a chance to speak with Rian Johnson at Fantastic Fest in Austin, just a few hours before the film's premiere, to chat about what else we can expect.

But you really haven’t seen anything until you’ve seen the new animated trailer for the film. Check it out below.
