While we previously assumed that the new Power Rangers movie would be a reboot, a new report suggests that’s not quite accurate. In addition to providing a few new details and character names, the latest on the upcoming Power Rangers film reveals a very…interesting…choice of title for the risky big budget project.

The biggest discovery of indie tearjerker Me and Earl and the Dying Girl was RJ Cyler, the newcomer who impressed audiences as the Earl of the equation. Both of his co-stars recently signed on for major blockbusters, leaving us wondering when we’d see Cyler do the same. The answer is now, as the young star has signed on to play the role of the Blue Ranger in the Power Rangers movie reboot.

Now, a new post on Twitter from the film’s official account has named a Red Ranger, with all of the pomp and circumstance of the appointment of a new Pope.

Yes, the Power Rangers reboot is still happening, and to prove it Lionsgate has begun eyeing a fresh group of new, young actors to fill those spandex power-suits. Director Dean Israelite and the studio have begun testing a handful of actors for the roles of the teenage heroes who will battle monsters in the latest incarnation of the classic series.

Although we were previously promised a film that would be “mature but playful,” the new details about the Power Rangers reboot make this film sound downright silly. It may be a reboot, but it definitely still features heroes, villains and specifics that you’re familiar with from the series. Basically, that fun Hollywood cliche applies: it’s different, but the same.

Power Rangers feels like such a strange property to reboot for the big screen, but then again, the idea of reviving Transformers as a live-action film franchise also seemed pretty weird at the time (and still kind of does). Last we heard, Roberto Orci is producing the new Power Rangers movie, which has been seeking a director for some time. They may have just found one in Project Almanac director Dean Israelite.

As the kids of the ‘80s and early ‘90s are dragged kicking and screaming into middle age, their nostalgia for the things they enjoyed in childhood has only grown stronger. And Hollywood has responded in kind, taking those childhood obsessions and transforming them into movies that are specifically crafted to appeal to adults with fond memories instead of kids. That’s why director Joseph Kahn’s new grim ‘n gritty Power Rangers short film is brilliant and unsettling in equal measure. On one hand, it’s exquisitely made and just tongue-in-cheek enough. On the other, it’s exactly the kind of movie that we’re worried will actually get made in the next few years.

Well, we don't know about you guys, but we've resigned ourselves to our new nostalgia machine overlords. Their latest decree: the film reboot of the long-running 'Power Rangers' TV series will officially hit theaters in 2016. That gives you plenty of time to figure out an excuse for where you need to be that day -- whether that's an excuse so you can go see the movie or an excuse to avoid it is up to you. As the newly announced 'Power Rangers' movie slowly makes its way towards the big screen, Roberto Orci, Ashley Miller, and Zack Stentz have been tapped to compose the story.
