Alien: Covenant

Ridley Scott returns to the universe he created in ALIEN with ALIEN: COVENANT, the second chapter in a prequel trilogy that began with PROMETHEUS – and connects directly to Scott’s 1979 seminal work of science fiction. Bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy, the crew of the colony ship Covenant discovers what they think is an uncharted paradise, but is actually a dark, dangerous world – whose sole inhabitant is the “synthetic” David (Michael Fassbender), survivor of the doomed Prometheus expedition.

‘Alien: Covenant’ Delivers Another New Image
At this point, every new image from Alien: Covenant is just another tick on the most passively annoying countdown clock — annoying because we have no idea how much time is left before the first official trailer finally arrives, but it has to be very soon by now. With the holiday weekend imminent, our money’s on sometime between tomorrow and Sunday, and it’s kind of fun to imagine watching a trailer for a new Alien movie first thing on Christmas morning as your family looks on in horror — especially if the trailer is anything like this new image.

We don’t have a trailer for Alien: Covenant yet (she wrote, wth a frustrated sigh) but we’ve been getting plenty of images from the folks at Fox that seem to be teasing a trailer release. The latest one, released through the “Alien Anthology” Twitter account, features one of those fun dark hallways that xenomorphs love to lurk in while they’re hunting their human prey.

There’s something interesting going on with these new images from Alien: Covenant, both of which were delivered with a series of numbers. They might not mean anything, but it seems unlikely that 20th Century Fox’s PR department would send images out with generic file numbers attached. While you puzzle over what these numbers mean (enjoy your traumatic LOST flashbacks), James Franco has basically confirmed his role in Ridley Scott’s new Alien prequel — just don’t expect him to reveal any specific details.

An interesting rumor surfaced over the summer, suggesting that Michael Fassbender is playing not one, but two droid roles in Alien: Covenant — the dangerously mischievous synthetic David from Prometheus, and a new and somewhat improved iteration known as Walter. Those dual roles have been confirmed, with the actor himself offering a few details about his intriguing new robot character.

Not too long ago it was rumored that Alien: Covenant will feature not one, but two versions of the synthetic robot played by Michael Fassbender. In a new interview, the actor himself confirms that not only will he reprise the role of mischievous, realistic droid David in the Prometheus sequel / Alien prequel, but that he’ll also be playing an identical synthetic character. Two Fass-bots in one film! These are truly blessed times.

Looking back, I’m not really sure there was ever a winning proposition for Ridley Scott’s Prometheus. The stakes were high enough when we only thought that Prometheus was a big-budget science-fiction movie for one of the genre’s great pioneers; once we learned that Prometheus would also serve as a prequel of sorts to the Alien universe, the film never stood a chance. Of course, Prometheus did not do itself any favors by awkwardly tying together Alien mythology with Interstellar-esque futurism, but maybe in a few years we’ll look back on the film with a little more fondness.
