The upcoming remake of Poltergeist is attempting to “contemporize” the original story for a more modern audience, since, you know, young modern audiences generally take issue with anything “old.” The first clip from the film gives us a taste of what they mean by that with a new take on an iconic scene, swapping “they’re here” for “they’re coming,” which is kind of the same, but different.

We’re still in a bout of disbelief over Starz returning Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell to their respective grooves for Ash Vs. Evil Dead, but that certainly won’t stop the Deadites from rising. Now, the trio of Campbell, Raimi and Rob Tapert have opened up on details of the new series, also revealing the first production photo.

We haven’t heard very much of Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell’s ‘Ash Vs. Evil Dead’ Starz revival since its inception, but the groovy one-time S-Mart stockboy won’t be alone in his new fight. Two new stars have joined the battle of ‘Ash Vs. Evil Dead,’ and both of them will hail to the king, baby.

The original 1984 ‘Poltergeist’ is one of the best horror films ever made. With its PG rating, it’s also one of the great Trojan Horses of genre cinema. Parents show it to their kids, thinking it will be a a little scary but totally family-friendly experience, only to realize too late (usually around the point where the guy hallucinates his face being torn off) that the movie means business. So, when we dive into the first look at the upcoming ‘Poltergeist’ remake, we do so with the skepticism of people who think the original masterpiece holds up as well today as it did over 30 years ago.

Raimi is echoing what most critics and fans have been telling him for the last seven years. ‘Spider-Man 3’ had the lowest Rotten Tomatoes rating of any film in the franchise (until this year’s ‘Amazing Spider-Man 2’), and it made less money in the U.S. than either of its predecessors. For many, it represents not only the lowest-point of the Spider-Man series, but for comic-book movies as a whole; the conclusion of Raimi’s Spider-trilogy routinely ranks among the worst superhero movies ever. Although Sam Raimi’s first two ‘Spider-Man’ films were mostly critically-acclaimed and loved by fans, most look back upon his ‘Spider-Man 3' with a mixture of confusion, disdain, and sadness—mostly due to a plot that feels less focused and Topher Grace’s hilariously, cartoonishly bad performance as Eddie Brock, aka Venom. But don’t feel too bad, you guys, because Raimi is admitting that he’s not a fan of ‘Spider-Man 3,’ either.

Year after year, the same-old 'Evil Dead' sequel and remake rumors get the chainsaw gears grinding from the likes of Bruce Campbell and Sam Raimi, but nothing groovy ever comes of it.
