Even the most casual of 'Smash' viewers knows that what started as a promising Broadway musical drama quickly devolved into the target of critical angst, leading to a complete creative shakeup in season 2 and the replacement of show-runner Theresa Rebeck with 'Gossip Girl' helmer Josh Safran. Now, as the series lies on the verge of cancellation, Rebeck had some rather harsh words for the direction 'Smash' has taken in season 2, and her own involvement in the debacle.

No one was exactly surprised when NBC's controversial Broadway drama 'Smash' made the leap to Saturday nights, effectively shelving the series as its second season continued to tank in the ratings. It was of very little surprise that 'Smash' season 2, for all its creative changes and efforts to address criticisms of the first season, was recently relegated to NBC Saturdays, presumably to air its final episodes and accept a quiet cancellation. Much of NBC's midseason lineup has continued to flounder, but what do the 'Smash' producers themselves have to say of the change? Will the upcoming finale prove to be the series-ender after all?
