Russell has been keeping him on the legit side of things with his role in Joy, but recent years have seen De Niro take a turn to the sillier, lighter side of things and Dirty Grandpa is his latest foray into the wacky, starring opposite Zac Efron in a film that sees the unlikely duo saddling up for a Spring Break trip.

Last week, Deadline reported that Paramount’s planned Baywatch reboot film starring none other than Dwayne ‘the Rock’ Johnson has begun to run screen tests in search of a worthy leading lady to bound pendulously down the beach alongside him...

We weren’t really interested in a Baywatch movie until Dwayne Johnson got involved — then again, Johnson’s name can guarantee our interest in just about anything. The upcoming big screen version of the classic ’90s TV series is also set to star Zac Efron, and has recently begun its search for some leading ladies. Paramount has reportedly tested a handful of actresses, including one that has some experience working with The Rock already.

The raunchy comedy casts the notorious Robert De Niro as the titular lech, and Efron as his buttoned-up grandson.

In 50 years, when some great journalist sits down to write the comprehensive biography of Zac Efron, the success of Neighbors will earn a special chapter. After all, that film was where Efron stopped being a fresh-faced, kid-friendly Disney star and started being a genuinely charming screen presence with some fairly serious comic chops. The future beyond that looks cloudy, so we don’t know if his decision to join the Baywatch movie will be viewed by future historians as a mistake or a surprisingly canny decision.

This is sort of a surprising-not-surprising news item. Universal is readying a sequel to last year’s phenomenally successful comedy ‘Neighbors,’ which starred Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne as married thirtysomethings whose suburban bliss with their newborn baby is spoiled by the arrival of a rowdy frat house next door. The first movie didn’t exactly leave a bunch of loose ends for Rogen, Byrne, and Efron to continue into another film, and comedy sequels don’t have a great track record. But the first movie did gross over $268 million worldwide against an $18 million budget. Hence the not-surprising part: Universal’s announcement that they’re working on a ‘Neighbors 2,’ which they hope to have in theaters by next summer.

'Neighbors' was the surprise comedy of the year -- despite Seth Rogen and Zac Efron's involvement, it was presumed to be just another reboot of a classic film, and it surpassed all our expectations.
