‘The Walking Dead’ Spinoff: AMC Announces New Companion Series for 2015!

The Walking Dead Spinoff TV Series

Not that we should be altogether surprised that AMC continues to grasp at straws following the imminent end of ‘Breaking Bad,’ ‘Mad Men”s final season in the coming year, and the sputtering of ‘Low Winter Sun,’ but ‘The Walking Dead‘ has officially spawned as well. AMC will develop a “companion series” spinoff to the monster drama focusing on a different corner of the zombie apocalypse, so what do we know thus far?

Eyed for 2015, perhaps during the summer to keep ‘Walking Dead’ buzz afloat all year, the new series will be executive produced by Robert Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd and David Alpert, with AMC Studios set to produce. No details are yet known of plot and casting, though the untitled series will focus on a different perspective of the zombie apocalypse from Rick Grimes and the characters we’ve come to know.

“Building on the success of the most popular show on television for adults 18-49 is literally a no-brainer,” said AMC president and general manager Charlie Collier. “We look forward to working with Robert, Gale and Dave again as we develop an entirely new story and cast of characters. It’s a big world and we can’t wait to give fans another unforgettable view of the zombie apocalypse.”

Says creator Robert Kirkman:

After 10 years of writing the comic book series and being so close to the debut of our fourth, and in my opinion, best season of the TV series, I couldn’t be more thrilled about getting the chance to create a new corner of The Walking Dead universe. The opportunity to make a show that isn’t tethered by the events of the comic book, and is truly a blank page, has set my creativity racing.

Granted ‘The Walking Dead’ seems far less likely to have its legacy tarnished by a spinoff than ‘Breaking Bad’ with ‘Better Call Saul,’ but for now we’re of the mind that AMC needs new ideas rather than to cannibalize its existing success. What say you? Would you want to see a spinoff to ‘The Walking Dead? Check out the latest preview for season 4, and give us your reactions in the comments!
