The brand new Batman vs. Superman trailer debuted late last night, and if you haven’t watched it already, you can watch it above right now. If you have watched it already…well, feel free to watch it again. And then join us as we break down the trailer to see what secrets are stored inside.

In sharp contrast to the Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailers, which showed very little, the Batman vs. Superman trailer sure feels like it shows us a lot, including the big reveal of Doomsday as the ace up Lex Luthor’s sleeve. In fact, watching this trailer feels like watching a condensed version of the entire film in chronological order. So, let’s slow it down and see exactly what’s going on.

Hey, it’s the Batmobile! OK, not quite, but here’s Bruce Wayne rolling up to a swanky, red carpet event at Lex Luthor’s place. And, look who else is there…

It’s Clark Kent, who’s been assigned to cover for the Daily Planet. That smirk is aimed at that billionaire who just rolled up to the party. Kent approaches Wayne and asks, “What’s your position on the Bat-vigilante in Gotham?” Clark Kent ain’t the only one who can smirk.

“He thinks he’s above the law,” Kent adds. To wit, this shot of a criminal chained to a radiator with the Batman insignia branded into his skin.

Oh snap, Batman went there. It’s unclear during this verbal sparring between Batman and Superman’s alter egos if they are aware who each other really are, but considering their aggressive tone and telling remarks, it would certainly seem as if they’re already on to each other.

Superman is called before the U.S. government, where there are both protestors and supporters of the Man of Steel have arrived to make their position known. Not that the God Hates Aliens signs is eerily reminiscent of the Westboro Baptist Church and their many protests.

A look inside the Batcave. The Batmobile is under a tarp and you can see Robin’s costume display on the right.

Speaking of the Batcave, here’s Jeremy Irons as Alfred who says to Bruce Wayne what we’ve all been thinking, “You know you can’t win this. It’s suicide.” Wayne calls Superman a “son of a bitch.”

Wait, does that street sign say “Fart Street”? There’s a Fart Street in Metropolis? And you said the DC Comics movies wouldn’t have a sense of humor.

It’s about to go down.

Batman is fully armored up. Snyder has said of Batman’s suit that it’s not intended as a weapon, but just to buy Batman some time, to try and find a way to defeat Superman. Pretty hard when Superman can do this:

OK, so Superman can fly. Batman just fires up the Batwing and takes to the skies to do battle, firing off round after round of heavy ammunition. Has he heard that Superman is impervious to such things and he’s just wasting his bullets?

Just in the nick of time, Batman uses his grappling gun to leap out of the way of a Superman blast. As a Lex voiceover says, “The greatest gladiator match in the world.”

It’s our first and only look at Lois Lane in this new trailer. She’s on top of a building with Lex and says, “You’re psychotic.” Lex responds with, “that’s a three-syllable word for thoughts too big for little minds.” Jesse Eisenberg does smarmy very well.

The Batmobile whips around the corner (of Fart Street?) to find Superman is waiting for him. This likely leads into the shot from the previous trailer where Superman rips the doors off the side and the two start rumbling. At the end, as Batman says, “It’s time you learned what it means to be a man,” Superman is slammed into a concrete walls and looks as if he’s…actually bleeding?

Now, here’s something interesting. It’s a shot from an earlier part of the scene from the Gotham teaser where Batman is captured by Superman. You can notice the soldiers all have Superman armbands. This is likely a Bruce Wayne nightmare of what a world run by Superman (and superpowered aliens) would look like. Those bug-like flying creatures are Parademons, the personal army of Darkseid, the Thanos-like character who has been rumored to be the main villain in the Justice League movie. HMMM.

That’s Mercy Graves, Lex Luthor’s personal assistant (who was seen briefly earlier in the trailer at the party both Kent and Wayne attended) escorting a mysterious metal crate. On the side it says, “United States Army Medical Research Institute of Infections Diseases”. What could possibly be inside? “HEAD” is a pretty good hint.

That soldier on the right has the name “Baker” on his hat. Would that be Animal Man, Bernhard Baker, who gained his powers from extraterrestrial radiation? If he’s spending time in the infectious disease unit, it just may be…

And inside that mysterious metal crate is the head (and body?) of General Zod. Looks like Luthor is getting frustrated that Batman can’t (or won’t) kill Superman for him.

“If man won’t kill God, the Devil will do it!”

That looks like an athletic bubble, but it seems to be where Lex Luthor is working on his master plan using Zod’s Kryptonian DNA.

Creating Doomsday.

There he is. Best known for the “Death of Superman” storyline in the comics, Doomsday was originally a monster born from the depths of Krypton. He was banished in a spacecraft and landed on Earth, where he promptly defeated all of the Justice League and engaged in an epic battle with Superman that supposedly ended with both of their deaths. (Guess what, they’re both still alive.) The movie version is different both in origin and design. This looks more like The Abomination from The Incredible Hulk than the spiky and bony version from the comics. Kinda looks like this Cave Troll from Lord of the Rings.

“Oh s---.” You ain’t kidding, Batman.

Doomsday doesn’t have face-exploding powers in the comics, so it’s unclear exactly what he’s up to here, but likely he]s absorbed some of Zod’s heat vision. How will they ever stop him? There’s only one man for the job, and it’s a woman.
