Bravo Risks Popularity With a ‘Heathers’ TV Series
Well, let it never be said that studio executives will eventually run out of past franchises to milk for the modern day. Almost 25 years after the film's release, it seems that 1988's dark Winona Rider / Christian Slater comedy 'Heathers' will make a return to modern audiences, this time in the form of an original scripted series. But will the new outing be a re-telling of the film's explosive popularity concept, or a sequel series?
High school is about to get nasty, '80s style, as we've learned from Entertainment Weekly that Bravo is looking to develop 'Heathers' as a new TV series. Fans of the the original 1988 film will remember Winona Ryder as Veronica Sawyer, a high school transplant who created a popularity bloodbath among the "Heathers" that rule the school along with her unstable love interest J.D. (Christian Slater).
Rather than retell the same story, the new 'Heathers' TV series will take place in the modern day, and see Veronica returned to Sherwood along with her teenage daughter. The younger girl would face similar high school difficulties as her mother, this time contending with "The Ashleys," daughters of the surviving Heathers.
'The Big C' writer Jenny Bicks will both write and executive produce the adapted series, though it isn't yet known if either film star Slater or Winona Ryder could have any potential involvement.
What say you? DO you think 'Heathers' could work as a TV show, even as a sequel series? What classic properties would you be interested in seeing brought to the small screen? Give us your picks in the comments below!
