Critics’ Choice Awards Go Ga Ga for ‘La La Land,’ ‘Deadpool’
There’s no such thing as certainty in awards season, and yet something tells me that at last night’s Critics’ Choice Awards, Margot Robbie won what will be her only decoration for assaying the role of Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad.
It’s a weird show with a lot of weird categories, and last night’s CCA ceremony came through with some weird picks. Those of you fearful that we may have been able to make it through this entire year without bestowing a major commendation on Meryl Streep just for good measure can take solace — the actress has finally received the recognition for Florence Foster Jenkins (which was a movie that came out earlier this year, to be clear) that’s been such a long time coming. But wait, there’s more! Were you aware that Deadpool was the best comedy in a year that included Popstar, Hail, Caesar!, The Lobster, Edge of Seventeen, hell, even Neighbors 2? Shocking but true, if you’re the voting body of the Critics’ Choice Awards.
On the TV side, matters played out a little more predictably. The expected citations for Courtney B. Vance and Sarah Paulson for their roles in American Crime Story both came through, as did a win for Louie Anderson for his gender-bending performance on Baskets. New to the party were the Westworld wins for Thandie Newton and Evan Rachel Wood; this could be a distant portent for Emmy supremacy far down the line.
And yet the greatest moment of all came near the close of the ceremony, when workplace satire Silicon Valley was announced as the recipient of the Best Comedy Series award. In what can only be described as the "O.D.B. jumping onstage to yell ‘WU-TANG IS FOR THE CHILDREN’ at the 1998 Grammys" of our generation, Atlanta’s Keith Stanfield joined the producers of HBO’s tech-comedy onstage and began accepting their award for them, much to the bafflement of pretty much everyone in the room. The cherry on top of it all? When producer Tom Lassally confessed, "I have no idea who that was."
