When it premiered at this year’s South by Southwest Film Festival, ScreenCrush’s Britt Hayes called Don’t Breathe “an intense, relentless and confident thriller.” Giving the movie a very solid 7/10 rating, she also called it a “relentlessly intense cat-and-mouse game with a couple of hard lefts thrown into its twisted domestic labyrinth.” All that from Fede Alvarez, the guy who made the relentlessly intense Evil Dead remake. Sold!

When that film premiered at the 2013 film festival, ScreenCrush’s Matt Singer (Hey, that’s me! said it “out-Evil Dead’s the original movie with even more gore, puke, blood, and dismembered limbs. It may not be wildly inventive, but it is effective.” I was definitely a fan, so I’m really intrigued by this new movie, which stars Avatar’s Stephen Lang as a blind man whose house is broken into by a bunch of enterprising thieves (including Evil Dead star Jane Levy). What they find inside [dramatic pause] surprises them. (But not you, if you watch the trailer, via Entertainment Weekly, so keep that in mind before you click.)

It’s like if Daredevil was a slasher villain! Looks mighty intense to me, and I’m glad Alvarez is working with Jane Levy again; she was terrific as the de facto Ash of his Evil Dead remake, and I’ve been hoping to see her in more movies. They’ve potentially got a good thing going together making horrifying movies where just the worst things happen to her. Don’t Breathe opens in theaters on August 26.
