Great ’90s Movies That Got Bad Reviews
There has never been a universally beloved work of art. No matter how popular, no matter how successful, there’s always at least one or two naysayers out there.
Or, in the case of the movies we’re looking at today, a lot of naysayers.
The list below contains 13 films that are (at least in one highly intelligent man’s subjective opinion) extremely entertaining. A couple are (again, at least to me) absolute classics of their genre and era. And every single one of them got mixed to flat-out awful reviews from critics.
Of course, none of them were universally reviled; there’s never been a film, no matter how derided, that didn’t have at least a couple of defenders. (Have you ever read the five-star reviews of Gigli on Letterboxd? They’re really something.) All of these movies currently hold “rotten” scores on the review-aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes (except one, and we’ll explain why it still counts below, because it absolutely does).
So here are some good ’90s movies that got bad reviews — listed from the ones with the most positive responses (which is to say, mixed) to the worst (i.e. this thing was trashed by almost every critic at the time ... but almost every critic was wrong).
