Well, that’s one way to promote your upcoming home video releases! A few months ago, fans who sat all the way through to the end of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 were treated to more than a handful of bonus scenes: they were also treated to “Guardians Inferno” by The Sneepers, a fictitious disco band that also included a guest appearance by noted German pop star David Hasselhoff. No bonus footage could hold a candle to the infectious disco pop of the song, and plenty of people - myself included - immediately went home and listened to the track on repeat. It’s everything we want the delightfully weird Marvel universe to be.

Had “Guardians Inferno” just been a fun track on the album, that would’ve been enough, but it turns out that the Guardians of the Galaxy cast has been keeping a secret: James Gunn shot an entire VHS-quality music video for the track, including guest appearances by pretty much every single member of the cast! Michael Rooker in a fake wig! Dave Bautista with a french horn! And, of course, the Hasselhoff himself in an open-chested spandex suit. Seriously, just watch the thing. My words won’t due it justice.

And if you find yourself surprised at how good this is, then I’ve got great news for you: this isn’t the only time that Gunn made something like this purely for his own amusement. Gunn’s PG Porn series - which takes stereotypical adult video situations and removes the sex - is right in line with the retro-VHS style on display in “Guardians Inferno,” though not nearly as safe for work as its title might suggest. This, more than anything, is emblematic of the James Gunn who came up through Troma Entertainment and cut his teeth on all kinds of trashy cinema. All hail the weirdo Gunn.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will be available on VOD August 8 and on Blu-ray August 22.
