On Wednesday, Halo 4 became the top-selling game in the U.S. for Microsoft Studios and 343 Industries.

The news comes from Major Nelson, who revealed Halo 4 managed to outsell previous record-holder Halo 3 during its first year of sales. "Congrats to the team at 343 Industries and Microsoft Studios!" Nelson said on Xbox Wire.

Halo 4 was the start of a new storyline (the Reclaimer trilogy), and introduced a new multiplayer facet in Spartan Ops. 343 Industries took over the franchise from Bungie with this latest entry, and is poised to continue the proud tradition of the franchise for the future, including on the Xbox One.

Microsoft didn't reveal any actual numbers in regards to these sales, but considering Halo is the game most associated with the Xbox brand, it's not all that surprising to learn the most recent sequel had such success. Whether or not that sales prowess can be matched by Halo 5 (or whatever Microsoft is calling it) remains to be seen, but it will most assuredly be a next-gen smash.
