Aw puddin’! This is so exciting!

The Hollywood Reporter says that Harley Quinn, the Joker fangirl who has a major role in this summer’s Suicide Squad movie, will not limit herself to just that film. THR reports Warner Bros. is also developing a spinoff movie for Quinn, played in David Ayer’s film by Margot Robbie. But it gets even more interesting than that; Robbie is “attached to reprise the character and would also produce [this] untitled spin-off” which would also co-star “several of DC’s female heroes and villains”:

Details are being closely guarded but names such as Batgirl and Birds of Prey have surfaced, although in what capacity, it’s not clear.

THR’s sources say that Robbie herself kickstarted the project because “when she got the part for the movie, she dove deep into the comics to learn as much as possible on the character. In the process, she fell for DC’s female characters. She brought on the writer to help develop the project and brought it Warners, which snapped it up.” They also note the character’s tonal similarities to Deadpool, another wisecracking antihero whose solo film became a huge phenomenon this year. People keep calling Suicide Squad DC’s Guardians of the Galaxy; could Harley Quinn (Plus Unnamed DC Superwomen) be DC’s Deadpool? Given how much money Deadpool made for Fox, I have to assume they hope so.

It’s dangerous to get too excited about this news before we see Suicide Squad; I was pretty excited about Batman v Superman a few months ago. But the idea of Harley Quinn potentially teaming with other DC heroines (Batgirl? Birds of Prey? Batwoman? Poison Ivy?!?) is mighty intriguing. Even with all of the superhero movies in the pipeline, there’s still a serious dearth of comic book films targeted specifically at women. Marvel’s got a near-monopoly on this world, but with a one-two punch of Wonder Woman and Harley Quinn, DC and Warners could really stake out their own territory. Instead of following in Marvel’s footsteps, they could start breaking new ground.
