Rhett Reese Thinks It’d Be Fun for Hugh Jackman to Cameo in ‘Deadpool 2’
Every time an actor says they’re retiring, or quitting, or done playing a role, there’s always some speculation that they’ll come back once the stars align. Sometimes that works, like how Hayao Miyazaki has claimed he’s retiring at least three times before making a grand return some months later. Hugh Jackman told everyone, and continues to tell everyone, that Logan is his last-ever appearance as Wolverine, but that hasn’t stopped some from trying to figure out ways in which he could be finagled into future X-Men movies.
In a lengthy interview with The Hollywood Reporter ahead of their new space-horror film Life, co-screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick talked a little bit about where their X-Universe was going to go, especially in regards to the next Deadpool film. When they were asked whether they’d consider having Hugh Jackman cameo in the movie, Reese thought it would be hilarious.
Oh my gosh, that's one we haven't heard. That's not a bad idea. I like that. Deadpool lives in a world where Hugh Jackman is out there. He's got the People's Sexiest Man Alive cover that he staples to his forehead in the first movie, so maybe he could meet Hugh as Hugh. That would be really funny.
Deadpool is all about irreverent takes on the X-Men and wider Marvel universes, and a Jackman-as-Jackman cameo would be a great opportunity for a few well-placed Wolverine jabs. A version of Hugh Jackman who has no idea who Wolverine is or that he looks just like him would be hilarious. Plus, that Deadpool 2 teaser plugging Logan means that Hugh Jackman exists in the same universe as his version of Wolverine. Which gets me thinking: are there non-super versions of all the other X-Men actors in the Deadpool movie universe? Is there a regular Ryan Reynolds running around out there whose only superhero credit is Green Lantern? Or do Deadpool and Reynolds playing Deadpool exist in the same universe? It’s enough to give you a migraine for a week. I need a nap.
Life is in theaters now.
