While James Wan was off making Furious 7, writer and collaborator Leigh Whannell was working on his directorial debut: Insidious Chapter 3, a prequel which promises to reveal the origins of the franchise’s spooky ghosts by taking us all back into the Further for another terrifying go-round. The final (and international) trailer for the film has landed online, offering an extended look at the latest installment in this chilling franchise.

Insidious Chapter 2 was just okay, but Chapter 3 seems like it may combine the best of both films, sans Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne. Chapter 3 is a prequel, which focuses more on Lin Shaye’s Elise, the psychic called upon in the first two films to aid in vanquishing evil spirits. Shaye is a fantastic character actor, the female equivalent to a “that guy” — someone whose work you’re more familiar with than their actual name.

So it’s great to see Shaye take more of the focus this time around, as she helps a teen girl deal with the evil spirits infringing on her life (which could also be a metaphor for parents, who just don’t understand):

The newest chapter in the terrifying horror series is written and directed by franchise co-creator Leigh Whannell. This chilling prequel, set before the haunting of the Lambert family, reveals how gifted psychic Elise Rainier (Lin Shaye) reluctantly agrees to use her ability to contact the dead in order to help a teenage girl (Stefanie Scott) who has been targeted by a dangerous supernatural entity.

In addition to writing and directing Insidious Chapter 3, Whannell co-stars with Shaye, Stefanie Scott, Dermot Mulroney and Angus Sampson.

Insidious Chapter 3 hits theaters on June 5.
