Director Jeff Tremaine's four movies (the three 'Jackass' films plus 'Bad Grandpa') to date have grossed over $300 million, almost assuring that he'd one day get the right to direct a traditional feature film. Well, today is that day. Tremaine has signed on to direct 'Dirt,' a biopic based on the tumultuous career of legendary glam metal band Motley Crue.

Though Tremaine has a home base with Paramount and MTV Films (who once owned the movie rights to 'The Dirt,' the band's bestselling autobiography), Deadline reports the film will be set up independently, allowing CAA to shop the rights during filming to the highest bidder.

Of the news, Tremaine said:

'Dirt' is something I pursued with everything I had. I’ve wanted to make this going back to 2001, when we were just planning the first Jackass movie...I connected with that book on so many levels. From a band of brothers that gets ripped apart and then pulls back together, or being part of a group that is expected to behave badly, and what happens to you when that becomes your expectation. What happens when everybody encourages you and gives you money to be the worst behaved you can be? You can do no wrong, and the worse you do, the more you’re celebrated. It is a story that is somehow familiar to me.

A Motley Crue biopic is nothing new. David Fincher, Larry Charles ('Borat') and Rob Zombie were all at times attached to direct the film over the past few years, but a variety of setbacks always kept the film in limbo. Ashton Kutcher was very loosely attached to star as Tommy Lee in the earlier iterations of the film, but is no longer attached, so if anything else, be happy that the delays resulted in some good. The Crue desperately fought to get the rights back from MTV, who they say were taking far too long getting the film made.

This new production will incorporate all the Crue's classic hits like "Girls Girls Girls," "Wild Side" and "Kickstart My Heart" (somewhere, Dwight Schrute is very excited).

Tom Kapinos ('Californication') is working on the current draft of the script, which will follow the rise (and fall) of Vince Neil, Tommy Lee, Nikki Sixx and Mick Mars.
