It seems to me that Moana brought in two very different audiences this holiday weekend. For some, Moana was the newest entry in a long line of Disney princess movies and a step in the right direction for the studio in terms of inclusiveness and empowering young women. For others, it was a chance to cure their Lin-Manuel Miranda withdrawals after the turnover of the Hamilton cast and the end of the regular Ham4Ham sidewalk performances. That probably explains the odd mix of millennials and children at the recent matinee you attended.

And with all due respect to the kids and the parents who had a great time during the movie, this Moana extra is probably aimed more at those twenty-somethings in the crowd. Disney recently released the audio for ‘Unstoppable’ (via Vulture), a Miranda track that dives into the history of the demigods in Hawaiian mythology. Unfortunately, it didn’t quite fit into the final movie, but it survives as a musical outtake for your listening pleasure.

Does this scratch that Hamilton itch? I wouldn’t be able to say for sure; I refuse to listen to the show until I have a chance to see it live, which means I’ll probably finally get a chance to listen to Hamilton in about 30 years when it’s as passe as Cats or Phantom of the Opera. Until then, I’ll leave the listening up to you and look forward to being the only sixty-year-old in the Hamilton theater who doesn’t have the lyrics to the musical memorized.

Here is the plot synopsis for Disney’s Moana:

Inexplicably drawn to the ocean, Moana convinces the mighty demigod Maui to join her mission, and he reluctantly helps her become a wayfinder like her ancestors who sailed before her. Together, they voyage across the open ocean on an action-packed adventure, encountering enormous monsters and impossible odds, and along the way, Moana fulfills her quest and discovers the one thing she’s always sought: her own identity.

Moana is now playing in theaters everywhere.
