Robert Rodriguez isn't messing around with his sequels -- 'Sin City 2' is filming right now for a release this year, and we've just received word that 'Machete Kills' will hit theaters this September.

Open Road Films, the folks distributing Robert Rodriguez's 'Machete Kills,' have released a statement about the, uh, release of the upcoming sequel, which is said to to be the second part of a planned trilogy -- the third film will allegedly take place in space, in case you ever wanted to see Danny Trejo wield a machete among the stars.

This is all good news, considering we previously reported that the film was in danger of getting pulled permanently. The short recap is that Rodriguez hit a snag when Overnight Productions did not receive the proper tax credit or budget information, which was needed to determine the producers' fee. They took legal action, which threatened to shut down production, but now everything looks to be back on track.

'Machete Kills' follows the titular Machete (Trejo) as he tries to stop a billionaire arms dealer from launching a new world war and creating utter chaos across the globe. The film also stars Michelle Rodriguez, Sofia Vergara, Amber Heard, Antonio Banderas, Charlie Sheen, Lady Gaga (uh, yeah), Jessica Alba, Demian Bichir, Alexa Vega, Vanessa Hudgens, Cuba Gooding Jr., Marko Zaror and Mel Gibson.

That's quite the cast for the Grindhouse-flavored follow-up. As previously mentioned, Rodriguez is also working on another star-studded sequel, 'Sin City: A Dame To Kill For,' which is scheduled to hit theaters on October 4. Two Rodriguez films within weeks of each other sounds kind of awesome.
