Over the decades, the 'Star Trek' franchise has been a lot of things, but it's never really been about action. Director JJ Abrams pushed this universe in that direction with his 2009 reboot, but there's no denying it with 'Star Trek Into Darkness': this thing is an action movie through and through. Two newly released images from the film do little to change that particular perception.

Both images come courtesy of Empire, who continue to dole out little bits and pieces about this film like a maniacal child teasing a helpless puppy. In a good way. We think.

Anyway, the images don't showcase an Enterprise crew who is off exploring the galaxy and making discoveries of great scientific work while making ethical decisions, but rather an Enterprise crew who have a bunch of guns and are going to shoot a bunch of bad guys in the face. Whether this is a good choice or a bad choice is something we'll leave to the Trekkies in the comments section. In any case, they make Kirk (Chris Pine), Spock (Zachary Quinto) and Uhura (Zoe Saldana) look pretty badass, if nothing else.

The official synopsis gives us a pretty good idea of why these three are going to need some big guns:

In the wake of a shocking act of terror from within their own organization, the crew of The Enterprise is called back home to Earth.  In defiance of regulations and with a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads his crew on a manhunt to capture an unstoppable force of destruction and bring those responsible to justice.

As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.

'Star Trek Into Darkness' opens on May 17th.
