Life kinda sucks when you’re a Disney pirate. One day you’re going about your business, plundering and looting in as family friendly a manner as you can muster, and the next thing you know you’re a undying ghost with all kinds of weird restrictions. Collect the gold, avoid moonlight, walk on water but not on land… honestly, is there even a rulebook for this sort of thing? The trial-and-error process these poor pirates must go through to figure out the boundaries of their life has to be exhausting.

That’s the focus of this new Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales clip (via ComingSoon). Johnny Depp’s Jack Sparrow has been chased down by Javier Bardem and his cabal of ghost pirates, only to discover that, hey, they can’t actually step on land. Of course, the movement of the tides probably means that the pirates would constantly have to be running about fifteen feet up and down the beach to account for the waves, but what do I know? I only graduated with a BA in Ghost Pirate Science from Arrrr-vard university.

All jokes aside, though, it’s good to see Javier Bardem cutting loose as Captain Salazar. As much fun as Depp’s Sparrow was the first few times around, whatever momentum this franchise still has is on the back of campy performances by Bill Nighy, Naomie Harris, Geoffrey Rush, and the rest of the ghost villain brigade. I’m not particularly interested in sorting out the Will Turner genealogy, but I’ll probably see this just to watch an unhinged Javier Bardem blow off some steam between more serious projects.

Here’s the full synopsis for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales:

The rip-roaring adventure finds down-on-his-luck Captain Jack feeling the winds of ill-fortune blowing strongly his way when deadly ghost sailors, led by the terrifying Captain Salazar, escape from the Devil’s Triangle bent on killing every pirate at sea — notably Jack. Jack’s only hope of survival lies in the legendary Trident of Poseidon, but to find it he must forge an uneasy alliance with Carina Smyth, a brilliant and beautiful astronomer, and Henry, a headstrong young sailor in the Royal Navy. At the helm of the Dying Gull, his pitifully small and shabby ship, Captain Jack seeks not only to reverse his recent spate of ill fortune, but to save his very life from the most formidable and malicious foe he has ever faced.

The film will also feature returning stars Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom, as well as newcomers Kaya Scodelario and Brenton Thwaites. The latest Pirates of the Caribbean film will hit theaters on May 26, 2017.
