Between Johnny Depp suffering an injury and forcing production on Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales to shut down for a month and then later supposedly skipping his flight back to the set after his injury healed, all of the recent chatter surrounding the latest Captain Jack Sparrow adventure has been weird and negative. In a reveal that surely has absolutely nothing to do with all of the recent rumor-mongering, producer Jerry Bruckheimer has revealed our first look at Depp in the film.

And he looks like Jack Sparrow. Again. And the memories of Pirates of the Caibbean: On Stranger Tides are still fresh in our minds, so this photo does little to cheer us up.

The Pirates of the Caribbean films have ranged from fantastic to unbearable, but maybe the fifth film will swing back toward the tone and spirit of the first two movies and avoid the pitfalls of the latter two. After all, directors Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg are new blood in a franchise that desperately needs to chart a new course. Maybe it’s okay to believe (to hope!) that this entry will right the ship.

No more boat puns. We promise.

Anyway, as you can clearly see, the image Bruckheimer tweeted shows Captain Jack tied up and, based on the expression on his face, in some kind of danger. We could possibly assume that he’s been captured by the new villain, played by the great Javier Bardem, a ghost pirate with a bone to pick with our hero. This raises one big question: how many nemeses does Captain Jack have and how many of them are cursed pirates?

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales will sail into theaters on July 7, 2017.
