‘SNL’ Also Made a Version of the ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ Trailer
‘SNL’ was off the week that the first ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ trailer broke the internet with its record-breaking release. However, like any comedy variety show worth its salt, it didn’t miss a beat when it returned this week, crafting a parody trailer that’s as hilariously mean-spirited as it is funny.
Blending actual footage from the real trailer with new clips shot with the cast and guest host James Franco, the video centers around one joke: Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher are old. However, the joke ends up working especially well because we didn’t see this returning trio in the actual trailer. Seeing Luke Skywalker fire up a walker made out of lightsabers is as funny as it is terrifying since we have no idea with Hamill actually looks like in the final movie. What if he really does seem too old?
They do manage to find some variety to the “these guys are old” jokes. Luke force levitates his pills. Han Solo orders the senior special at the Mos Eisley Cantina. Princess Leia can’t figure out how to properly program R2-D2. You know, all of the uncool stuff that we will never actually see this senior citizens doing on screen. But now, when you finally sit down to watch the new ‘Star Wars’ next year, you can imagine elderly Han Solo sipping Metamucil between action scenes.
