‘Star Wars’ Concept Art Reveals a Young Han Solo

Following the news that Han Solo is among the first characters getting his own 'Star Wars' spinoff movie, fans of the franchise immediately jumped to Twitter shouting out names on which actor would be perfect to portray a young Han Solo. (Garrett Hedlund from the 'Tron' franchise was among the standouts.) While we're coming up with our own top picks, take a look at this early 'Star Wars' concept art featuring Han Solo in his younger years.

We've already seen what Chewbacca and Yoda could have looked like before their early concept art depictions were eventually scrapped by Lucasfilm, but perhaps these images of a young Han Solo will be put to some use now that the character is getting his own 'Star Wars' spinoff.

It turns out that George Lucas originally wanted to feature a 10-year-old Han Solo in 'Star Wars: Episode 3 - Revenge of the Sith,' but we all know that story went in a different direction. We can still see what that character might have looked like, thanks to this early 'Star Wars' concept art of Solo (found via Slashfilm) by Iain McCaig.

In the book 'The Art of Revenge of the Sith,' in which the below concept art was featured, McCaig said:

It’s not in the script anymore, but we were told that Han Solo was on Kashyyyk [in 'Revenge of the Sith'] and that he was being raised by Chewbacca. He’s such a persnickety guy later on – he always has to have the best of everything – so I thought it’d be great if when he was a kid, he was an absolute slob.

A little different encounter than the one originally established that had Han Solo save Chewbacca from slavery while he was in the navy, as StarWars.com points out, but still, it's fun to think about. Also published in the book was young Solo's cut-out part in the film, which led to the discovery of General Grievous' location:

Han Solo: "I found part of a transmitter droid near the east bay… I think it’s still sending and receiving signals."

Yoda: "Good. Good. Track this we can back to the source. Find General Grievous, we might…"
