‘Star Wars’ to Survey Female Heroes Across the Galaxy With ‘Forces of Destiny’ Animated Shorts
Star Wars is great, everyone’s pretty much on the same page about that one, but the problem is that it’s just so dang long. Eight movies, with more on the way? And they’re all two-plus hours? And there are TV shows?! It would take a viewer days if not weeks to wade through all of that action, and so the minds at Lucasfilm and Disney have done us all the service of condensing Star Wars into segments a little closer to bite-size. In the future, everyone will be world famous for 15 minutes; likewise, in the future, new Star Wars content will be between two and three minutes long.
To coincide with fan convention Star Wars Celebration Orlando, Lucasfilm and Disney have announced plans for a series of animated shorts called Star Wars: Forces of Destiny. The new bits will revolve around the assorted adventures of characters we recognize from the big screen, with Felicity Jones, Daisy Ridley and Lupita Nyong’o all lending their vocal talents to reprise Jyn Erso, Rey, and Maz Kanata, respectively. This press release announcing Forces of Destiny refers to the project as an “initiative,” by which they mean that the property will extend to novelizations and a two-part TV special slated for the fall of this year as well. And of course, it wouldn’t be a new Star Wars thing without lots and lots of branded merchandise to buy — the press release name-checks “books, apparel, bedding, and toys.” You’ll never have to sleep without the watchful protection of Jyn Erso ever again.
