‘Star Wars’ Spinoff Movie to be Directed by ‘Godzilla’ Helmer Gareth Edwards
Fresh off of 'Godzilla''s huge opening weekend, director Gareth Edwards has been hired to helm one of the 'Star Wars' spinoff films, which will be released December 16, 2016. That's an impressive leap for Edwards, who made his feature film debut in 2010.
This news comes from The Hollywood Reporter, and because of the secrecy around the franchise, there's no word on which spinoff he would helm. Yoda and Boba Fett have been the most mentioned candidates for their own standalone movie, but anything in the universe seems fair game at this point, and considering the leeway given to J.J. Abrams, it's possible that Edwards will be able to start from scratch. We do know that Gary Whitta, who previously wrote 'The Book of Eli' and 'After Earth,'will be writing the screenplay.
Gareth Edwards had this to say to THR: "Ever since I saw Star Wars I knew exactly what I wanted to do for the rest of my life - join the Rebel Alliance! I could not be more excited & honored to go on this mission with Lucasfilm."
Edwards got his start in the visual effects department, and directed a TV movie in 2005, but it was 2010's 'Monsters' -- a low budget monster movie that saved its money shots for the end of the film -- that put him on the map. He followed that with this summer's 'Godzilla,' which opened last Friday and has already made over $200 million worldwide. We're going to guess this means that Warner Brothers and Legendary are going to have to wait until 2017 (at the earliest) for 'Godzilla 2,' which is already in development.
