Guillermo del Toro

A lifelong lover of movies and monsters, Guillermo del Toro grew up in Mexico where he studied filmmaking and special effects. After several Spanish-language hits, he moved to Hollywood where he found even greater success. His specialties include beautiful horror films (‘The Devil’s Backbone,’ ‘Pan’s Labyrinth’) and dark superheroes (‘Blade II,’ ‘Hellboy’). He worked extensively on ‘The Hobbit’ films before Peter Jackson signed on as director, and as a producer his credits include ‘Mama,’ “Splice,’ and the animated feature ‘The Book of Love.’

Netflix’s plan to double its original content by 2016 proved undoubtedly ambitious, and it seems DreamWorks Animation may help it happen. The two have partnered up to add some major names to Netflix’s original programming slate, including a new Voltron series, as well as Guillermo del Toro’s Trollhunters project.

Did Marvel Reject Gaiman and del Toro’s ‘Doctor Strange’?
Back in 2008 (seven years ago, if you can believe it), Neil Gaiman expressed interest in developing a Doctor Strange movie with Guillermo del Toro. As far as we knew, that idea never really materialized, Marvel was never made aware of it, and it was eventually forgotten. But according to Gaiman, perhaps that isn’t entirely true — perhaps Marvel passed on their idea.

‘Justice League Dark’ Reportedly Eyeing Directors
Although Guillermo del Toro parted ways with Warner Bros. over his vision for Justice League Dark (aka Dark Universe), the studio is still reportedly planning on moving forward with del Toro’s script — but without (almost) everything else that would make it a del Toro film. The other day rumors began circulating about potential cast members, and now comes word that WB is eyeing possible directors for the project as well.

Guillermo del Toro’s exit from Justice League Dark (aka Dark Universe) at Warner Bros. left many confused as to how — or if — the studio would proceed without him. But with the studio’s anti-hero blockbuster Suicide Squad generating excitement, a new rumor suggests that not only is WB moving forward with del Toro’s script, but they’ve also got their eye on at least a couple of potential stars.

Guillermo del Toro‘s Twitter account is a wonderful place. While the rest of us are clogging the internet-tubes with #hottakes and making the same lame joke about future World Overlord Donald Trump for the eightieth time, the Mexican filmmaker has been grinding out recommendations to help viewers better prepare to see his new horror gothic romance film Crimson Peak. Though our own Matt Singer was no great fan of the film, many critics have dealt the baroque spookfest resoundingly positive notices, praising the film’s elegant style. Del Toro has been more than willing to give his credit where credit is due and specifically recognize the works that assisted him in the realization of his vision. But amidst the abstract painting and fantasy novel recommendations, del Toro provided a tantalizing prospect for the future.

Last summer, Guillermo del Toro teased a small, black and white indie film project that he wanted to film earlier this year before heading into production on Pacific Rim 2. That didn’t happen, and Pacific Rim 2 has been delayed until who-knows-when, which leaves del Toro free to pursue that smaller project next. He just might, and in a new interview he’s finally dropped some details about the film, which will be much smaller than his recent studio films.

Persistent rumors have suggested that Universal is no longer planning on delivering Pacific Rim 2, but that hasn’t stopped Guillermo del Toro from talking about his plans for the (possibly?) upcoming sequel. Although the film has been removed from the studio’s release calendar, del Toro is still trying to work things out, and he has at least one popular actor he’d like to cast.
