Over the last several years we’d heard reports that a new movie was in the works to bring beloved retro cartoon ‘The Jetsons’ back, with Kanye West involved in some capacity. Apparently those plans have changed, and ‘The Jetsons’ will now become a new animated feature film with the help of the screenwriter of the new ‘Scooby-Doo’ animated film. Just keepin’ things in the Hanna Barbera family.

Deadline reports that Warner Bros. is developing a new animated ‘Jetsons’ movie with writer Matt Lieberman, who recently scripted the upcoming ‘Scooby-Doo’ movie for the studio. WB liked his ‘Scooby-Doo’ work so much that they’ve put that project on the fast-track and set Lieberman to work on ‘The Jetsons.’ Lieberman, who got his start in the Disney Writers Program, has several other scripts in development, including a new adaptation of ‘Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride’ for Disney and a remake of ‘Short Circuit.’

Previously, there had been some sort of live-action ‘Jetsons’ movie in the works for some time, although those plans never sounded very solid, with conflicting reports about Kanye West’s involvement in overseeing the creative direction of the project. An animated film definitely sounds like a much better plan for the retro-futuristic animated clan of George, Jane (his wife!), daughter Judy, and his boy Ellroy. Oh, and Rosie the maid and Astro the dog, of course.
