We knew Thor: Ragnarok was about to change things for the MCU as soon as we heard what the subtitle was going to be. The Asgardian Apocalypse, involving a literal goddess of death bringing an end to the mightiest civilization in the multiverse, is probably going to shake up the rest of our universe a little too. Recently, Marvel chief Kevin Feige confirmed that Ragnarok would indeed bring the MCU to a place it can’t go back from, and lead right into Infinity War.

Speaking with the Toronto Sun, Feige noted that Thor: Ragnarok was the end of the Thor trilogy, of sorts. Like the Iron Mans and Captain Americas before it, Ragnarok will wrap up Thor’s current storyline, while also acting as the beginning of a new one.

I think that we are finding ourselves as we complete Phase 3 and finish this 22-movie narrative that it’s working out that way. We did three Iron Man films, three Captain America films, three Thor films. Things change drastically in Ragnarok and then build directly into Infinity War.

It certainly looks like Asgard is about to be burnt to a friggin’ crisp, and so what does that mean for our buddies back on Earth? Ragnarok is also the first Avengers movie to bring its heroes into space — since, in the Planet Hulk storyline, which the movie will draw from, Hulk is shuttled off into deep space to protect our planet from his unpredictable wrath. Of course, he ends up on a planet that enjoys goading captives into participating in gladiator fights, but not every plan is foolproof.

Obviously, since Marvel is very good at keeping all those juicy secrets, we can’t know for sure exactly what Feige means. But I’ll wager it has something to do with Hela (Cate Blanchett, all antler’d up in the trailer) and Thanos’ sort-of-relationship. In the comics, Death is personified literally, and Thanos becomes obsessed, determined to do something really impressive to get her attention. And what’s more impressive than a metal glove and a bunch of rocks that allows the bearer to do literally anything he wants?
