‘Wonder Woman 2’ Reportedly Goes Into Production Next Summer
It took a while to iron out all the details but Patty Jenkins is returning to direct Wonder Woman 2, the 2019 sequel to the film that permanently shifted the superhero movie landscape. Gal Gadot will once again as the title character, although it’s still not clear whether we’ll see Chris Pine back in a supporting role for this sequel. (If you saw the first film, you know why.)
Per Omega Underground, we also know a little bit more about when the movie is set to start shooting and what it may be about (besides, like, Wonder Woman, being, uh, wonderful and whatnot). They found a production listing that stated Wonder Woman 2 starts shooting in June 2018. And it came with this story description:
The sequel will be a period piece, with Princess Diana facing off against the Soviet Union during the 1980s.
Whether this plot synopsis is accurate or not (and even if it is, it could change between now and next June), a story like this sounds inevitable. You’ve got to move Diana’s story forward in time, but you can’t go all the way forward to the 2010s, because that’s when she meets Batman and Superman and the Justice League forms. Setting it more recently, but not too recently, means you don’t have to worry about those pricy period details. It also gives you the chance to set Wonder Woman 3 in the 1990s, and have Diana learn about all the decade’s most embarrassing fads.
Wonder Woman 2 is supposed to open on December 13, 2019. And, of course Gadot will play Diana next in Justice League, which is due in theaters next month.
