Out with the old X-Men, in with the new. Neither DC nor fully Marvel, Fox's odd-duck X-Men cinematic franchise has been in the process of reinventing itself over the past couple installments by gradually integrating its past and present. I mean that literally — through a whole heap of time-travel tomfoolery, the original X-People we came to know during the original trilogy of films in the early ’00s have been commingled with the new generation of throwback X-Folks as shown in the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s in First ClassDays of Future Past, and Apocalypse. The chronology can be a lot to swallow, and it’s about to get even more confusing: we may now have two Rogues.

Just as Game of Thrones star Sophie Turner supplanted Famke Janssen in the role of Jean Grey, it looks like the X-Franchise may be gearing up for a new, more youthful Rogue in the upcoming installment. Omega Underground reports that X-Men: Dark Phoenix audition tapes have surfaced (the provenance of which is pretty sketchy, so maintain a healthy sense of skepticism) for a role by the name of Marie. Knowledgeable comics fans will recognize that Rogue’s real first name is Marie, hinting that kid actress Alexa Swinton may be in the process of securing a gig as Rogue’s younger self. Other characters being cast include “Shane” and “Sam,” but those don’t lend themselves as readily to guesswork as Marie.

For all we know, sure, maybe these are just random no-name characters and the X-Men movies are staffing up for its own sake. But the Marie thing seems too conspicuous to be coincidental. Better start fitting Swinton for a pair of fancy leather gloves. X-Men: Dark Phoenix will hit theaters on November 2, 2018.
