The future of the X-Men movie franchise is very much in flux, thanks to the merger of Fox — the studio that released every X-Men movie to date — and Disney — the owners of Marvel, the publishers of X-Men comics. But at least one proposed spinoff is still apparently in development.

According to writer Brian Michael Bendis, his project, reported early last year as a Kitty Pryde spinoff movie to be directed by Deadpool’s Tim Miller, is still very much alive. In fact, he’s writing it right now:

During his tenure writing X-Men comics, Bendis wrote many Kitty Pryde stories. (He also wrote Kitty into his Ultimate Spider-Man comic, where she dated Peter Parker for a while.) Kitty, whose power is she can pass (or “phase”) through solid objects, was introduced in Uncanny X-Men #143, and has remained a fixture of X-Men comics for decades. She previously appeared in a few of Fox’s X-Men movies, first in cameos and then in supporting roles, played by Ellen Page.

In addition to this project, there’s still the unreleased New Mutants movie, which is now slated to debut in August, and Dark Phoenix, which opens on June 7. Beyond that, we will likely have to wait and see how Marvel integrates the X-Men into the broader Marvel Cinematic Universe, which could absolutely involve movies like this Kitty Pryde thing.
