Comic-Con 2017 is right around the corner, and one of the films we’re hoping to see at the big 20th Century Fox panel in Hall H is The New Mutants, the studio’s next X-Men spinoff. We’re not banking on seeing any actual footage from the film itself, however, since it officially went into production today — as evidenced by a photo from director Josh Boone, who received a pretty funny gag gift to mark the occasion.

Boone, who previously helmed The Fault in Our Stars, announced the start of production on The New Mutants with an Instagram photo showing off the great gag gift he received from cinematographer Peter Deming:

As noted by Boone, production officially begins today on the X-Men spinoff, which stars Game of Thrones favorite Maisie Williams as Wolfsbane, Split’s Anya Taylor-Joy as Magik, Stranger Things star Charlie Heaton as Cannonball, 13 Reasons Why’s Henry Zaga as Sunspot and newcomer Blu Hunt as Danielle Moonstar. Just last week it was reported that Alice Braga (I Am Legend) signed on to replace Rosario Dawson in the role of Dr. Cecila Reyes, a mutant who acts as a mentor of sorts to the super-powered teens.

Boone is directing The New Mutants from a screenplay he co-wrote with longtime friend and producer Knate Lee. The two originally pitched the project as a trilogy, with Boone recently describing it as a “full-fledged horror movie set within the X-Men universe.” That said, unlike Logan and Deadpool, this one is aiming for a more accessible PG-13 rating.

The New Mutants is currently scheduled to hit theaters on April 13, 2018.
