There’s no stopping The Dark Tower from making its way to movie screens this time, but one still has to wonder if Ron Howard’s ambitious, multi-platform adaptation might have simplified its approach to finally go before cameras. Well, whether or not Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey succeed in bringing The Dark Tower to life, Howard says a TV tie-in series is still in development.

The same interview that saw producers Ron Howard and Brian Grazer confirming a few rumored plot changes also called into question the franchise’s TV future. Long before director Nikolaj Arcel signed on to adapt Stephen King’s famous saga, Grazer and Howard envisioned a series of Dark Tower films, bolstered by a TV branch that would bridge the gap between films. According to Howard, that’s still the case:

The original plan was so ambitious, with three movies and a TV series interspersed between. How has that evolved?

It hasn’t, really. We’re developing the television part, now. We don’t know what platform it will be on at this point, but we’re developing the content in hopes for more movies that will cover the epic and the characters involved.

The hotly anticipated film is currently scheduled for release on February 17, 2017, but might firmer plans for a TV tie-in shake out before then?
