More than any before it, Hannibal Season 3 leaned on the written word of franchise author Thomas Harris, particularly Red Dragon, occasionally adapting entire exchanges and scenes to fit the renewed context of Bryan Fuller’s twisted love story. One scene in particular between Hannibal and Will splashes right off the page in all three filmed adaptations, captured in a new mashup of Hannibal, Red Dragon and Manhunter.

A new feature titled “Recovering The Mindset,” edited by Matthew Morettini, looks at the same confrontation between Will Graham and Hannibal Lecter, as portrayed in Michael Mann’s 1986 Manhunter between William Peterson and Brian Cox, Brett Ratner’s 2002 Red Dragon between Edward Norton and Anthony Hopkins, and in Bryan Fuller’s Hannibal between Hugh Dancy and Mads Mikkelsen.

Rather than overlay the same dialogue (You try mashing together Anthony Hopkins and Mads Mikkelsen’s deliveries, okay?), the fascinating video moves through the same basic beats of Will attempting to pique Hannibal’s interest in analyzing the “Tooth Fairy” killer’s file, each actor adding their own distinct flavor to the relationship. Cox’s naturally proves a bit more subdued than the Hopkins version ingrained in pop culture, while Mads Mikkelsen’s take adds the subtext of a jilted lover’s relationship between the pair.

Whether or not we get to see Bryan Fuller’s take on Silence of the Lambs one day, this may prove one of the few opportunities to directly compare Hannibals across different mediums in one scene. Our hearts still ache by the recent finale, but if nothing else, NBC’s iteration has earned its place in pop culture canon.
