We're still over a month away from the final 'How I Met Your Mother' premiere, kicking off the longest wedding weekend in televised history, but that doesn't mean the finale season for Ted, Marshall, Lily, Robin and Barney will be without its surprises. New intel on the CBS swan song reveals that we'll meet more of Robin's extended family, while the series creators discuss the possibility of a spinoff.

According to TVGuide, the 'How I Met Your Mother' final season will see fit to introduce the few remaining unseen parents from between all five core characters, namely Robin's two mothers. "We'll meet Robin's new stepmom, who wants to sing at her wedding," says executive producer Carter Bays. "And Robin's mom, whom we've said almost nothing about, will also be a factor, whether we meet her or not. We'll be exploring why Robin hasn't talked to her. Her personality will help explain Robin in the same way her dad's did."

And while 'How I Met Your Mother' had not been the subject of spinoff speculation over the course of the year as certain other departing series might be, Bay recused to rule out the possibility of "a relationship-themed spinoff" developing after the May series finale.

So far, the final season of ‘How I Met Your Mother’ has recruited such guest stars as ‘Revenge‘ star Roger Bart, ‘The Office‘ star Ellie Kemper, Sherri Shepherd, Wayne Brady and John Lithgow reprising their roles as Barney’s half-brother James and biological father Jerry. In addition to the most recent clarifications on the final season’s wedding weekend format, CBS also revealed that all four regulars would meet the mother (Cristin Milioti, herself a newly minted regular) prior to Ted.

'How I Met Your Mother' season 9 will premiere with an hour-long installment on September 23, but what say you? What surprises do you hope to find in store for the final year, if indeed a spinoff remains out of the question?
